Why your Suno track sounds different after download — loudness, MP3 vs WAV, and what the numbers actually show

I kept noticing the same thing. Listen to a track in Suno's player — sounds good. Download it — and something feels off. A little flatter. A little quieter. Like the air went out of it.

My first assumption was that I was imagining it, or that the browser and my media player were just EQ-ing things differently. So I actually measured it. Took three of my own tracks, compared the WAV and MP3 versions of each with a LUFS meter, and wrote down the numbers.

The result was consistent enough across all three that I stopped calling it a coincidence.


What I actually measured

Three tracks. Same generation, both formats downloaded for each. LUFS is a measurement of average loudness — the standard that streaming platforms use to decide how loud a track plays. True Peak is the highest instantaneous level, measured in dBFS (0 dBFS is the ceiling; going above it means clipping).

Three tracks, three times: the MP3 version was louder than the WAV version. By an average of about 1.3 LU — not a huge number on paper, but definitely audible. And every single time, the MP3 also had a higher True Peak, meaning less headroom before clipping.

This is one person's test on three tracks. It's not a claim about every Suno track ever generated. But the direction is the same in all three cases, which is enough to say it's a real pattern worth knowing about.


So what does this actually mean?

If you're on a paid plan (Pro or Premier) and downloading WAV — which is the lossless option, the one you'd reach for if you're planning to edit or master the track — you're getting a file that's measurably quieter than what the MP3 version sounds like.

And here's the likely scenario: Suno's browser player is probably streaming the MP3 internally. You hear the track at MP3 loudness. Then you download the WAV and play it back through your own media player. It's the same generation — but the WAV, by these numbers, is going to be about 1-2 LU softer.

That difference is enough to make it feel "worse" even if the file itself is technically the cleaner, better-quality version.


The True Peak issue is worth paying attention to separately

Look at Track 1: the MP3 true peak measured at 0.0 dBFS. That's the ceiling. It means the file has peaks that are right at the edge of clipping — or beyond it, if you account for inter-sample peaks that the meter might not catch.

For a file you're going to keep on your hard drive and listen to, this might not matter much. But if you're planning to upload this to Spotify or distribute it anywhere, streaming platforms will apply their own loudness normalization — and if your peaks are already at the ceiling, that normalization can create distortion. They turn things up or down during playback, and a track that's already right at 0 dBFS doesn't have room to be handled cleanly.

The WAV versions in my test all had -3 to -4 dBFS of headroom. That's much safer for anything you're going to process further or upload somewhere.


The format question itself

Suno exports two formats. MP3 is available on all plans — the files I downloaded on my Premier account came out at 192kbps / 48kHz, though I haven't separately verified what Free and Pro plans deliver. Pro and Premier also get WAV — 16-bit / 48kHz, lossless. (I confirmed the 48kHz spec via ffprobe on all three WAV files used in the measurements above.)

My measurements showed something I didn't expect going in: the MP3 isn't just smaller, it's also louder. That's a known behavior with some MP3 encoders — the encoding process can push levels in ways that don't happen with lossless formats. It's not unique to Suno. But it explains the "sounds worse after downloading the WAV" experience very specifically.

If you download MP3, you're getting something loud and convenient. If you download WAV, you're getting something quieter and cleaner, with more room for post-processing. Neither is wrong — they're just different tools for different situations.


What you can do with this

If you just want to listen: MP3 is fine. It's louder, plays everywhere, sounds completely decent on speakers or headphones.

If you're going to master or distribute: start from WAV. Yes, it'll be quieter when you first play it back. That's not a flaw — that's headroom. It gives you more control over where the final loudness lands, and you won't be fighting a file that's already clipping before you've touched it.

If the WAV sounds quiet and that bothers you: a LUFS meter will show you exactly where it sits. From there, even a basic loudness boost in any audio editor can bring it closer to whatever target you're working toward. This is easier to do cleanly from a WAV than from an MP3 that's already hitting the ceiling.

If you don't have WAV access (Free plan): the MP3 you get is genuinely decent quality. The loudness is there. The limitation is that you're starting from a compressed source if you want to do anything to it later — the quality floor is lower, even if the loudness isn't.


The short version

The track sounds worse after downloading not because something went wrong — but because the MP3 and WAV versions of the same Suno generation have measurably different loudness. In three tests, MP3 came out louder by an average of ~1.3 LU with less headroom to spare.

If you heard the track in the browser and then downloaded the WAV, you're comparing MP3 loudness to WAV loudness. The WAV is quieter by design — and cleaner. It just doesn't announce itself as loudly.
